🔮 Reflecting on a Year of Growth and Empowerment
Welcome back to the Koi Wellness blog, your trusted resource for child development and empowerment. I'm Aya Porté, your occupational therapist (OT) dedicated to supporting cross-cultural families and nurturing each child's unique potential. As we approach the end of the Japanese school year, it's the perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey we've shared over the past year.
This year has been filled with meaningful conversations, practical strategies, and personal reflections aimed at empowering you and your family. Let's take a moment to revisit some of the standout topics we've explored and the valuable resources available to support your child as they continue to grow.
Understanding Behavior: Beyond Labels
One of the most impactful discussions this year was about shifting perspectives on children's behaviors. In “Is It Sensory or Behavior?”, we explored how behavior and sensory processing are deeply intertwined. Rather than viewing behavior as a problem, we learned to ask, "What is this behavior teaching us about the child, and how can we support them?"
Similarly, “Is My Child Spoiled or Sensory-Driven?” addressed the critical difference between willful behavior and sensory-driven responses. Understanding these distinctions can help us approach our children's needs with compassion rather than judgment, allowing us to create supportive environments for growth.
Goal-Setting and Personal Growth
At the start of the year, we focused on turning intentions into action with “Setting Goals for the New Year: Tools for Success.” We introduced SMART Goals and the Goal Attainment Scale (GAS), two practical frameworks to help families set and achieve meaningful goals. Revisiting these strategies now can be a powerful way to prepare for the upcoming school year.
Supporting Multicultural and Third-Culture Kids
In “Building Resilience in Multicultural Kids,” we explored the unique experiences of children growing up between cultures. From navigating identity and belonging to balancing different communication styles, we discussed how to help multicultural and third-culture kids feel understood and supported. This article remains a valuable resource for families looking to foster resilience and confidence in their children.
Understanding Primitive Reflexes and Sensory Processing
Our exploration of “Why Primitive Reflexes Matter for Your Child's Growth” and “Understanding Primitive Reflexes: Signs, Impact, and Next Steps” highlighted how retained primitive reflexes can impact a child's development. We provided actionable steps for identifying and supporting reflex integration, offering tools to help children thrive in their daily activities.
Additionally, “Decoding Sensory Processing: A Parent's Guide” offered insights into how sensory processing differences affect behavior and learning. Recognizing the signs of sensory over-responsiveness, under-responsiveness, and sensory-seeking behaviors equips families with the knowledge to better support their child's needs.
Empowering Through Child-Led Approaches
Last year, we also focused on fostering independence and confidence through child-led approaches. In “Understanding & Empowering Therapy: Child-Led Approaches” and “Child-Led Approaches at Home & the Checklist for Parents,” we discussed how allowing children to take the lead in therapy and daily activities can build intrinsic motivation and resilience.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Journey

Whether you're revisiting goals, navigating sensory challenges, or supporting your child's cultural identity, Koi Wellness is here to support you.
Here are some practical steps to carry this momentum forward:
Revisit Past Goals: Reflect on the SMART and GAS goals you set at the beginning of the year. What progress have you made? What adjustments are needed for continued growth?
Observe and Reflect: Pay attention to behaviors and sensory responses. Use the insights from our sensory processing and primitive reflex articles to better understand and support your child.
Foster Open Communication: Create safe spaces for your child to express their feelings, especially as they transition into a new school year. Listening deeply can uncover needs that might not be immediately visible.
